SAGA SEED THEATRE
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR
Tan Liting works full time as a theatre practitioner with an interest in devising performance from personal stories. Liting’s past directorial credits include Pretty Butch (M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2017), Eulogy (bae Collective, Taiwan), Binatongue (Just Theatre), The Truth About Lying: Heresy and Common Sense for the Theatre (The Finger Players), Taking The Subs (The Substation Director’s Lab), (When I’m) Sixty Four (Ageless Theatre), Re: Almost Left Behind (Singapore Arts Festival 2011). Liting likes conversation, hearing and telling a good story. Liting also likes guitars, sneakers and referring to Liting in third person. Liting is also a founding member of Theatre Cell, a collective that was started to provide platforms for theatre jamming and training without the pressure of putting on a production.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
My interest is in telling stories that you may not hear at all: especially stories that belong to communities and people who are not in the mainstream, and tend to be oppressed or silenced for various reasons. These stories tend to be personal in nature, and my interest is in finding a way to make the personal relatable. Whether in a devising process or approaching a written play, I’m looking for openness and a willingness to share from within. I want to explore themes and issues that are not always talked about. What I aim to create is an environment that is safe enough for the playwright, performer and audience to have these discussions together, and to be vulnerable and open to sharing a moment together.
I deal primarily in text-based and character driven work, and am willing to explore other performance styles and forms based on the needs of the stories being told. The people and the stories are my priority, and the art form must serve their needs.
